Pele is not only seen as a national hero in Brazil, but also as one of the father’s of soccer in the United States. He is the greatest soccer player of all time, and has the credentials to prove it. He scored his first international goal at the age of 16, won his first World Cup at the age of 17, and averaged around a goal per appearance in all of his time in the World Cup.
After he was considered over the hill, he came to the U.S. to play for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League where his popularity increased the awareness of the sport in the states, and made the league somewhat profitable while he was there. Unfortunately, Pele didn’t play forever and the league went under soon after his retirement in 1977. Later, Pele was named ‘Athlete of the Century’ by the International Olympic Committee.
